Edit a lead's field values

Correct a typo or mis-keyed value on a stored lead from the lead drawer, with every change recorded and attributed to you.

Campaigns6 min readUpdated

This article shows you how to correct the field values on a lead that is already stored, for example a misspelled email or the wrong state sent by a supplier.

An edit writes straight to the stored lead. It does not run the lead through ingest again, and it does not re-send it to any buyer.

Prerequisites

  • An Admin role. Only admins see the Edit fields button.
  • The lead's campaign still exists. A lead whose campaign was deleted cannot be edited, because the field types and rules come from the campaign.

Edit a lead

  1. Open Leads from the sidebar.
  2. Click the lead to open its detail drawer.
  3. On the Campaign Fields card, click Edit fields.
  4. In Edit lead data, change the values you need. Fields are grouped under the same headings as the drawer.
  5. To change one of the protected fields described below, click Click to edit on it first.
  6. Click Review changes. The button shows how many fields you changed.
  7. Check the Field, Current and New values in the review table.
  8. Click Confirm and save, or Back to keep editing.

Expected result: the new values show on the lead, each changed field carries an amber Edited badge, and the lead is marked Modified. Leads list filters, sorting and search use the new values straight away.

Which fields you can edit

You can edit any field the lead's campaign defines, whether or not the lead has a value for it. A field the supplier never sent shows up empty, ready to fill.

Protected fields

These five fields are offered on every lead, even if the campaign does not define them. Each is locked in the form until you click Click to edit, and locks again when you close, cancel or save the dialog. A dash means the lead has no value yet.

Field Rule
ip_address Must be a valid IPv4 or IPv6 address
country Must be a 2 letter code. Saved in uppercase and cannot be emptied
external_id At most 255 characters
affiliate_id At most 255 characters
sub_source At most 255 characters

The lock is a pause, not a permission. Any admin can unlock these fields. It is there so they are not changed by accident along with the rest of the form.

Fields you cannot edit

These are never editable, because they decide attribution or billing, or come from the device or enrichment providers rather than the supplier:

  • traffic_source and supplier
  • is_test and test_type
  • click_id
  • user_agent
  • enrich_data

Enriched Data from integrations and device or location lookups is also left as it is. If you submit one of these keys, it is ignored.

Validation

Values are checked against the campaign's own field settings, so the rules match what the supplier API would have accepted.

Check What happens
Required field Cannot be emptied
List field The value must be one of the field's options. List fields show as checkboxes, because a lead can hold one value or several
Typed field Email, phone, URL, zip, date, number, true or false, IP and timezone values are checked by type
Fixed generated value Only that value is accepted

You only need to send the fields you change. A required field you did not touch is not an error. Numbers and true or false values are saved in their proper type, so rules and buyer templates keep matching them.

See the edit history

  • Click an Edited badge beside a field to see when it changed, who changed it, and the old and new values.
  • Click History on the Campaign Fields card to see every edit on the lead.
  • Open the Activity tab. Each save shows as a Lead Edited event naming the author and the fields changed. Expand it for the full old and new values.

What an edit does not do

  • It does not re-send the lead. A buyer that already received the lead keeps what it received, and no postback fires. If you redistribute the lead later, the buyer receives the edited values.
  • It does not run rules, the duplicate check or integrations. Changing an email or phone to a value another lead already has is not caught.
  • It does not change Enriched Data.

Edits and CSV imports

Manual edits and CSV import updates write to the same lead data, so the order matters.

What happens Result
You edit a lead, then an import updates it The import overwrites only the columns the CSV maps. Fields the CSV does not map keep your edit. Both changes show on the Activity tab
You edit a lead, then revert that import Your edits are restored, because the import's snapshot was taken after them
An import updates a lead, you edit it, then revert the import Datahubb asks what to do with your edits first. It shows how many leads and fields are affected and offers a CSV of current and post-revert values. Keep the hand-edited values is ticked by default

With Keep the hand-edited values ticked, only what the import wrote is undone and your corrections stay. Clear it and every field goes back to its import-time value, and your edits are lost for good.

If a recurring import matches leads on a field, do not edit that field. After the edit, the next import no longer recognises the lead and creates a new one instead of updating it. This applies to the protected fields too. The edit dialog warns about this.

Troubleshooting

  • No Edit fields button. You are not an admin. Editing is admin-only.
  • A field shows a value but no input. It is a protected field. Click Click to edit.
  • A field is missing from the form. The campaign does not define it, or it cannot be edited. Add the field to the campaign if it should be editable.
  • "is required and cannot be emptied". You cleared a required field. Enter a value, or change the field's post status on the campaign.
  • "No changes to save". Every value you submitted was locked, unknown, or unchanged.
  • The buyer still has the old value. Edits are not re-sent. Redistribute the lead if the buyer needs the corrected values.

Frequently asked questions

Only users with the Admin role. Other users do not see the Edit fields button on the lead drawer.

No. A buyer that already received the lead keeps the values it got, and no postback fires. If you redistribute the lead later, the buyer receives the edited values.

No. Supplier, traffic source, test flags, click id, user agent and enrichment data are never editable, because they decide attribution and billing or come from outside the supplier's data.

Click the Edited badge beside a field, or open the Activity tab. Each save is recorded as a Lead Edited event with the author's name and the old and new values.

If the import updated the lead before you edited it, Datahubb asks first. Keep the hand-edited values is ticked by default, so only what the import wrote is undone.
